So, you may be wondering what a wheel alignment is and how exactly does it effect tire wear and the handling of your vehicle. You may be asking yourself, when should I do an alignment? How do I know if my wheels are out of alignment and what causes them to go out of alignment?

A wheel alignment is simply the act of setting the angle of the wheel so it tracks in the correct direction. Most vehicles have four-wheel alignments, which means each of the four wheels is separately aligned. A front end alignment simply refers to aligning the front two wheels of your vehicle. All vehicles needs to be properly aligned, regardless of whether you drive a car, truck, SUV or motorcycle. Your basic alignment consists of three angles: caster, toe-in and camber.

Caster is the inclination of the front spindle. Picture the angle of the forks on a bike top to bottom. When your caster goes out, it can cause a pull or wandering condition and can sometimes cause your steering wheel to be slow to respond.

Toe-in is measured in degrees or inches. Viewing from the front of your car, it is the difference between the front and rear center-line of the wheel. Toe-in basically means the front of the tires are closer together. Toe-out means, the fronts of the tires are further apart. Toe-in or out can cause a lot of tire wear.

Camber is the tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of your car. A positive camber means the top of the tire is tilted away from your car. A negative camber means the top is tilted in.  Too much negative camber will wear the inside of  your tires. Too much positive camber will cause wear the outside of your tire.

When a car or motorcycle is no longer in alignment, it causes the tires to wear prematurely.  With the price of tires, you want to keep your car in alignment as long as possible. Other symptoms are pulling to one side, poor handling, and wandering back and forth. An alignment will also affect your steering wheel responsiveness.

Your alignment should be checked approximately 10,000 - 12,000 miles. Potholes, curbs, an objects in the road can cause damage and should prompt you to have your alignment checked.  Even changing the tire size can effect your alignment. Worn bent or loose suspension can have an adverse affect on your alignment too. Most people do not know if their alignment is out. The best way to check it is with a precision alignment tool.

If you accidentally  drive through a nasty pothole, hit a curb or other obstruction, that should be a clue to have your car's alignment checked. Proper alignment is good for your car and your tires. It will ensure that your car is giving you the handling that the factory designed the vehicle to have. And, most importantly, a properly aligned car is safer and is more fun to drive. So, make sure you get your wheels aligned and be sure to look for alignment coupons, to save you money.
